Developing a field-ready robotics platform for non-chemical weed control in agriculture demands more than just innovation, it requires engineering that delivers under pressure. For Earth Rover, the creators of CLAWS, selecting the right drive solution was critical to enabling their high-accuracy, zero-emissions weeding and crop analysis system.
CLAWS needed to operate consistently in unpredictable outdoor conditions, across loose soil, debris, and variable inclines, all without compromising accuracy or uptime. After evaluating a range of options, Earth Rover specified PMW’s IG9190 Geared Motor, which met their stringent performance requirements across torque, reliability, and environmental durability. The IG9190 delivered on all fronts, with dependable torque response at low speeds, and efficient power usage, perfectly suited to the platform’s photovoltaic and battery-based energy system.

Originally conceived as a platform for plant monitoring, CLAWS has evolved into an advanced multi-function robotic system capable of both crop scouting and precision weeding. Its mission: eliminate the need for chemical herbicides and support sustainable farming practices through machine vision, AI, and class leading robotics.
To support its stop-start mobility pattern, CLAWS relies on fast, reliable drive response across all four wheels. The torque and positional stability offered by PMW’s motors ensures that the robot can stop precisely over a weed, target it with concentrated light, and resume motion without lag or drift. This level of motor control is essential for CLAWS’ ability to differentiate between crop and weed at sub centimetre resolution, whilst also deliver repeatable performance across hours of autonomous operation.
For Earth Rover, developing CLAWS wasn’t just about assembling components. It was about building a reliable, field-ready platform with precision performance from day one. From initial specification through to in-field integration and troubleshooting, PMW’s engineering have worked closely with Earth Rover to ensure the drivetrain meets the demands of real-world farming conditions.
This collaborative approach is central to how PMW operates. Rather than simply supplying components, we work alongside our customers’ engineering teams to offer insight, technical guidance, and practical support where it’s needed. For complex platforms like CLAWS, having a responsive and experienced motor partner helps streamline development, reduce integration time, and ensure performance is achieved reliably in the field.
As farms increasingly adopt autonomous systems, the demand for robust, electrically efficient, and field-proven components is growing. CLAWS represents a new class of agricultural robotics. Emission-free, chemical free, and data-driven, designed for farms that prioritise soil health, sustainability, and operational efficiency. At PMW Dynamics, it’s a privilege to support a team that’s pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in sustainable agriculture. CLAWS is more than a robot, it’s a glimpse into a future where non-chemical weed control farming is smarter, cleaner, and more accessible. We’re thrilled to be playing a role in helping pioneers like Earth Rover bring that future to life.
Now entering its Beta Pioneer stage, CLAWS is being trialled by early adopters ahead of pilot production. With the order book opening in Q3 2025 and deliveries scheduled from Q1 2026.
